Removing Fibroids without Incisions

About 25% of all women have fibroids (benign tumors composed of muscle tissue in the uterine wall). Not all fibroids cause symptoms or medical problems and require treatment. In general, the size and location of the fibroid within the uterus determine the type and severity of symptoms and the need for treatment. If fibroids are located inside of the uterine cavity, they will cause abnormal bleeding, menstrual irregularities, pain, and infertility. Such fibroids can be suppressed with medical treatment but they return to their original size soon after the treatment is completed. The only cure for such fibroids is surgical removal. One procedure for removing fibroids, called hysteroscopic resection, can be performed on an out-patient basis without the need for incisions. It is best reserved for the removal of small fibroids (smaller than 3 centimeters) and only those of the type that grow into the uterine cavity (intracavitary or submucosal fibroids). The procedure involves inserting a hysteroscope through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. An electrode attached to the hysteroscope is then used to shave-off the fibroid with an electric current. The pieces of fibroid tissue are then removed through the vagina.

Hysteroscopic resection is one of a number of uterus-sparing surgical techniques that have enabled some women to avoid hysterectomies. If you have troublesome fibroids, ask your gynecologist if this procedure would be appropriate for you. For additional information on this subject, or to schedule an appointment, telephone OAK BROOK FERTILITY CENTER, a medical practice devoted to reproductive endocrinology, infertility, and assisted reproductive technology. New patients are welcome.

P.S. Hysteroscopic resection offers the advantages of enhanced fertility, less blood loss, and a return to normal activities within a few days of the procedure.
