About W. Paul Dmowski, M.D., Ph.D., FACOG

W. Paul Dmowski, M.D., Ph.D., FACOGDr. W. Paul Dmowski, Director of the Oak Brook Fertility Center (OBFC), has been practicing infertility in the Chicago area since 1971. He is Board Certified, both in Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility (RE/I) and in Obstetrics/Gynecology (OB/GYN), and holds both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees.

Dr. Dmowski is well recognized nationally and internationally for his pioneering research in the field of RE/I. He has published more than 300 original articles, textbooks, and textbook chapters. He is a member of numerous professional societies and is a frequent speaker at national and international meetings. He has served on editorial boards and as a reviewer for professional journals and on governing boards of professional societies. He has received awards and recognitions from the American Medical Association, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and has been listed in Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who in Polish America. He has also been recognized recently as one of the top Obstetrician/Gynecologists in the country.

During his academic career, which spans more than three decades, Dr. Dmowski has held many prestigious positions. He was on the Faculty of the University of Chicago between 1971 and 1979 as Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor of OB/GYN. Between 1979 and 1981, he was a Professor of OB/GYN at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and since 1981, has been a Tenured Professor of OB/GYN at Rush Medical College in Chicago. He established, and for many years directed, fertility programs and departments of RE/I at Michael Reese Medical Center in Chicago, the University of Arkansas, Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, Lincoln Park Hospital (formerly Grant Hospital) of Chicago, and Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn. He also established, and for many years directed, an American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology approved RE/I Fellowship Training program at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center. Many graduates of that program are well-recognized fertility specialists in the USA and abroad. One of the graduates of the Rush RE/I program is Dr. Nasir Rana who subsequently joined Dr. Dmowski in private RE/I practice.

In 1983, Dr. Dmowski established, and for many years directed, one of Chicago's first In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) programs at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center; then five years later, a second IVF program at Lincoln Park Hospital (formerly Grant Hospital) of Chicago. When technological advances made a free-standing IVF center possible, Dr. Dmowski and his associate Dr. Rana designed and built one of the first private, entirely office-based IVF programs in the country - the Oak Brook Fertility Center - which opened in the Spring of 1990.

Research in the field of RE/I has been one of Dr. Dmowski's major passions during his entire academic career and endometriosis has been his major interest. In 1967, under the direction of one of the pioneers of RE/I, Professor Robert B. Greenblatt, Dr. Dmowski began experimental and clinical research with new synthetic hormones. One of these, which subsequently became known as Danazol (Danocrine), became the first effective medical treatment for endometriosis and is still in clinical use. During the 1980's, Dr. Dmowski evaluated and helped introduce into the treatment of endometriosis, a group of hormones classified as GnRH agonists. Included in this category are Lupron, Synarel, Zoladex, and Buserelin. GnRH agonists are as effective as Danazol in the treatment of endometriosis but have a different mechanism of action than Danazol and a different pattern of side effects.

Unfortunately, none of the currently available treatments can cure endometriosis because the cause of the disease is unknown. In order to better coordinate basic and clinical research, Dr. Dmowski founded the Institute for the Study and Treatment of Endometriosis (Endometriosis Institute) in 1988. An on-going research at the Endometriosis Institute is focused on identifying the cause of endometriosis and, supported by this knowledge, on discovering better diagnostic techniques and better treatment methods. Studies at the Endometriosis Institute demonstrated that changes in the immune function are associated with endometriosis and that deficiency in the cell-mediated immunity may be the cause of the disease. These changes in the immune function seem to be transmitted genetically or may be acquired through the effect of the environment. Currently, research at the Endometriosis Institute is focused on identifying molecular events that lead to abnormal cellular immunity and to the development of endometriosis. Once this information becomes available, screening procedures to identify women susceptible to endometriosis, preventive measures, and cause-directed treatments can be developed. A clinical trial with a promising, newly developed hormone not as yet on the market has just been completed. The drug belongs to the class of GnRH antagonists which are similar to GnRH agonists but have several clinical advantages. Other approaches to the management of endometriosis, such as treatment with locally administered hormones which have a direct effect on endometriotic lesions but few if any symptoms or side effects, or modification of the immune response with immunomodulators are also being studied under Dr. Dmowski's direction at the Endometriosis Institute.
